Taking dance behind the bars…

Classical dancer of West Bengal Alokananda Roy, had already been much loved and appreciated for her work. But she decided to go a step ahead and do her bit for the society. She designed a project and took the ‘Dance Therapy’ to the prisoners in West Bengal’s correctional institutions. Presidency Correctional Home had around 2,000 inmates, and her dance therapy did not just helped them to fight with acute depression but also helped them in building self-esteem and add more into their tagged identities of a ‘Prisoner’. She is presently continuing this project with convicts of Presidency Correctional Home, Kolkata and other Correctional Homes of West Bengal. The inmates also get chances to perform outside the boundaries of the prison wall. Awakening of their art-instincts also helps bring back their self respect, best in their personality and gives the prisoners hope and purpose.
